The James E. Pepper Distillery is home to one of Kentucky's most iconic whiskey brands, tracing its roots back to the American Revolution. The Pepper family built and operated two legendary distilleries: the original site that is now home to Woodford Reserve and the historic James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington. After the bourbon industry fell on hard times in the late 1960s, the Lexington distillery was abandoned and left in disrepair for over half a century.

In 2008, whiskey entrepreneur Amir Peay relaunched the Pepper brand, sparking a revival rooted in extensive historical research. Following a multi-year restoration effort, the James E. Pepper Distillery was fully rebuilt and began distilling again in December 2017, using the same historic recipe from its pre-1967 operations.
